Big Data and Internet of Things
It is said that “data is power”. Many businesses and individuals
understand this power. What is Big Data? It is a term used to refer to a
huge collection of data too complex and large to be process with classic
methods. Individual personal computers are not capable of collecting,
managing, and processing the big data. The problem was defined by the
Gartner Group in 2001 as the “3V Problem”. The letter “V” is standing
for: Volume (the amount of data), Velocity (how quick we generate new
data) and Variety (different types of data collected).
At the same time, people are excited by The Internet of Things which
is a big generator of data. The notion of an Internet of Things (IoT) was
introduced by Kevin Ashton in 1999. IoT is the idea of connecting physical
objects to Internet. IoT carries the possibilities offered by a world where
everything is tagged and connected to Internet.
In this paper we are observing the trends around how the IoT is taking
shape: from the types of data being gathered to the ways the data is
being applied. Across the following pages, we will build towards a final
chart illustrating an overview of IoT products currently on the market.
